Install and connect to Jira Packs

Whether you use Jira Cloud or on-premise Jira: a guide for installing and connecting to the Jira and Jira Data Center Packs

Updated over a week ago

This article covers how to install either the Jira Cloud or Jira Data Center Pack - plus how to get started with Jira in Coda. If you are not familiar with the Jira Pack, Jira Data Center Pack, or Packs generally please consult the linked articles.

The Jira Pack and the Jira Data Center Packs are two separate ways of accessing Jira from Coda. The Jira Pack is available on Team and Enterprise plans and is used for connecting to cloud-based instances of Jira. The Jira Data Center Pack is only available on our Enterprise plan, and is used for connecting to on-premise instances of Jira. Install and connect the Jira Pack

If this is your first time installing a Pack, we recommend you check out these intro articles on installing a Pack and connecting to the Pack account.

There are slightly different installation steps for the standard Jira Pack and the Jira Data Center Pack, so we’ve broken the steps up into two sections.

Jira Pack (for Jira Cloud) installation

First, you need to install the Jira Pack in your doc:

  1. On any blank line in your doc’s canvas, type a forward slash, followed by Jira (e.g. /Jira )

  2. From the drop-down menu, select Jira (under the More Packs header)

  3. You’ll then see a preview with all kinds of helpful info on the Pack. Click Add to doc in the upper right.

Next, when you’re ready to start using any of the Jira building blocks (i.e. create an Issues table, use a Jira formula, etc.) - you’ll be prompted to connect the Pack to your Jira account. Follow these steps to do so:

  1. You can either select an existing Jira account (if there is any) or add a new account.

  2. You will need to set the read permission level to determine who can view the data pulled from Jira. Our suggestion is to go with “You and anyone this doc is shared with.” You can always edit the read permission level later; See Jira Pack Settings on how to do so.

  3. You will need to set the write permission level to determine who can perform actions in Jira within Coda. This allows whoever you grant permission to the ability to modify your Jira instance (such as create a new Jira issue). Our suggestion is to go with “Only you.” You can always edit the write permission level later; See Jira Pack Settings on how to do so.

That’s it - the Pack is now installed and ready to be put to use!

💡Tip: As an alternative to the slash command, you can browse and search Packs by clicking on Insert (upper right corner of your doc), and then type in “Jira” in the search box. You can also streamline the search by selecting Packs first and then type in “Jira” in the search box.

Jira Data Center Pack (for Jira on-premise) installation

If you want to connect to your on-premise instance of Jira, you’ll want to install the Jira Data Center Pack. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. Ensure your org admin (typically your IT admin) has enabled the Jira Data Center Pack for your team to install (full instructions on managing Packs for your Enterprise workspace here). Your org admin can approve Packs to be used by going to coda.io/docsclick on 3 dots in the bottom-left next to “More options” → Organization settings → Packs Approvals → Packs in your organization

  2. Make sure the Jira Data Center Pack is enabled, and ensure your organization’s on-prem Jira Data Center instance meets these 3 requirements:

    1. Be served via HTTPS and have an SSL certificate signed by a public certificate authority.

    2. Have a publicly accessible hostname that resolves to an Internet-accessible IP address.

    3. If a firewall or VPN is used to secure access to Jira Data Center at a network level, the IT administrator must add an IP allowlist so that Coda can access this system.

  3. On any blank line in your doc’s canvas, type a forward slash, followed by Jira (e.g. /Jira data ). Click on the first option.

  4. You’ll then see a preview with all kinds of helpful info on the Pack. Click Add to doc in the upper right.

Now the Pack is added to your doc. Once you start putting the Pack to use (i.e. creating an Issues table, adding a Create issues button, etc.), you’ll be prompted to connect the Pack to your Jira Data Center account:

  1. Enter your Jira Data Center URL and API Token.

    1. The API token refers to a unique identifier you can obtain from Jira to permit Coda to connect to your Jira instance. In Jira, this is referred to as a Personal Access Token. See the FAQ below for info on how to find this token.

  2. You will need to set the read permission level to determine who can view the data pulled from Jira. Our suggestion is to go with “You and anyone this doc is shared with.” You can always edit the read permission level later; See Jira Pack Settings on how to do so.

  3. You will need to set the write permission level to determine who can perform actions in Jira Data Center within Coda. This allows whoever you grant permission to the ability to modify your Jira Data Center instance (such as create a new issue). Our suggestion is to go with “Only you.” You can always edit the write permission level later; See Jira Data Center Pack Settings on how to do so.

🎉 That’s it - the Pack is now installed and ready to be put to use!

Jira Pack Settings

In the settings of each Pack, you can set the default refresh rate for Pack data. You can also add, remove, and manage Pack accounts via the settings. To locate these settings...

  1. Click on Insert in the upper right corner of your doc

  2. Select Packs and then type in “Jira” in the search box

  3. Under Installed Packs, select Jira

  4. Scroll through the Settings tab to see all the ways you can customized your Jira permission levels and sync frequencies.

Put the Jira Pack to use

Once you’ve installed and connected the Jira or Jira Data Center Pack, you’re ready to start using any of its many building blocks. To see what these Packs have to offer, head to the Pack page by following these steps:

  1. Click on Insert in the upper right corner of your doc

  2. Select Packs and then type in “Jira” in the search box

  3. Under Installed Packs, select Jira or Jira Data Center

  4. Scroll through the Building blocks tab to see all the ways you can start using the Pack

You’ll see templates, tables, buttons, formulas, and more. You can click and drag any of these building blocks into your doc.
