With Coda’s support for doc, page, header, and table linking, you can create quick hyperlinks that automatically display the correct info and direct your teammates to the exact right spot in Coda. Link to other docs
To create a link to another Coda doc, start by copying the doc URL. If you want to link to a specific page, be sure you are either on that page when you copy the URL. Alternatively, you can click on the three-dots next to the page name in the page list, hover over Copy link to page, and select Copy link.
Once you’ve copied the link, simply paste it into the canvas of another doc. A hyperlink will be created by default, but you can choose from several other display options including a plain URL or a rich card.
Link to specific pages
💡 If you’re creating a link to a page within the same doc, the easiest and quickest way is to use Coda’s @ mentioning feature. Simply type @ in the canvas of your doc, followed by the name of the page you wish to link. For instance: @PageName. You’ll see a list of matching options within the doc and can select the page there.
Besides using Coda’s @ mention feature, you also have the option to manually create the links to specific pages. To do so, find the page you wish to link in the page list, click on the horizontal three-dot menu next to the page name, and select Copy link to page.
Or, you can grab the page link using the link icon next to the page options.
You can then share or paste the link as needed. If you are pasting the link within Coda, it will be automatically be created as a hyperlink. But you can change it to a rich card if desired. If the linked page is within the same doc, the card will show the page title and subtitle. If the linked page lives in a different doc, the card will show the doc title and page title.
💡 Tip: If you are sharing a page with tables or views that are filtered by personal filters (the filter bar or personal controls), you have the option to generate a page link that automatically sets the values for these filters. You can even create a distinct link for every unique combination of filter options on a page.
To create this page link, first set the personal filters as desired on the page. Then, in the page list, click on the three-dot menu next to the page name. Hover over the Copy link to page option, then select Copy link with values. The link will be copied to your clipboard, and you can then share that link as needed.
Link to headings
Headings are a useful way to add organization and clarity to your pages. Coda offers three different sizes of headings, from large (H1) to small (H3). You can also create links to specific headings so that viewers are brought to the exact right location on a page.
Start by creating a link to the heading. To do so, hover over the heading on the page, click on the three-dot menu that appears to the left of the heading, and select Copy link.
Then simply paste or share the link wherever you need it. When anyone with doc access clicks on that link, they will be navigated to the correct section of the doc.
When you paste the link within the same doc, you’ll see that a hyperlink with the heading text is automatically created. You can choose to convert the hyperlink to a card. To do so, hover over the hyperlink, select the pen icon, click the vertical three-dot menu at the top of the menu, and choose Card from the display options. Note that the card will only show the page name rather than the heading text - but clicking on the card will still lead viewers to that specific heading.
Link to tables
If you want to direct others to a specific table within a Coda doc, you can create a link to that table. When someone clicks on this link, they will be taken to that table - even if it’s in the middle of a long page.
To create a link to a table, hover over the table, click the three-dot menu to the left of the table title, and select Copy link from the options.
Then you can share or paste the link as needed. If you are pasting the link within the same doc, a hyperlink with the name of the table will be automatically created. If you add the link to a different doc, the link will only display the page title (rather than the table title), but will still lead to the table when clicked.
FAQs
How do I change the display type of my link (change to hyperlink, card, URL, etc.)?
After you’ve added the link in your Coda doc, you may later wish to change how the link is displayed. For instance, maybe you chose to display the link as a rich card but now want to change it back to a standard hyperlink. You can do so by hovering over the link and looking for the pencil icon. Then click on the vertical three-dots, and choose from the list of display options.
What info will be displayed in the hyperlink or card?
The default info displayed on the hyperlink or rich card will depend on what you’re linking to.
When linking to a separate doc (whether linking to a page, a heading, or a table), the hyperlink and card will automatically display only the doc title and page title.
When linking to a page within the same doc, the hyperlink and card will display the page title and a page subtitle (if available).
When linking to a heading within the same doc, the hyperlink will automatically show the heading text. If you convert the link to a rich card, only the page name (and subtitle) will be shown.
When linking to a table within the same doc, the hyperlink will automatically display the table title.
If you wish to have different info displayed for a link, then we recommend using the traditional hyperlink method rather than Coda’s auto-generated hyperlinks.
Can I resize rich card links?
Yes, once you’ve created a card you can resize it as needed. Hover over the card to reveal the grab bars on either end. Click and drag on these bars to adjust the size of the card.
Is there a quicker way to create links to other parts of the same doc?
Yes - depending on what you want to link to, you may be able to create a link using Coda’s @ mention feature. To do so, just type the @ symbol into the canvas of your doc. You’ll then see a list of all objects in the doc that can be referenced. Keep typing to search for a specific object, then select it from the list to quickly create a link. Now when someone clicks on that link, they’ll be navigated to the corresponding part of the doc.
Note that this is a great way to quickly create links to pages and tables, but headings and certain other objects can’t be linked this way.
When I create a link to a specific page, will table filters on that page be preserved in the link?
If your page has tables or views that are being filtered by personal filters (the filter bar or personal controls), you can create a page link that pre-sets those filters when opened. All you need to do is set the filters as desired, create the page link, and then share with others. When someone uses that link, the page will open with those personal filters pre-set and the tables filtered accordingly.
To create this filter-preserving page link, first set the personal filters to the desired values. Then, in the page list on the left, click on the three-dot menu next to the page name. Can I send direct links to specific rows in a table?
Yes - you can create a link that will direct users to a specific row in a Coda table. To do so, you can either hover over the left side of the row, right-click, and select Copy link to row. Or expand the row, click on the vertical three dots in the upper right corner, and select Copy link to this row. If you use the latter method, the link will lead the user to an expanded view of that row.
