Add reactions to your doc's text and tables

Use reactions to quickly get feedback and add more interactivity to your docs.

Updated over a week ago

With Coda, you can use drag-and-drop templates to quickly add things like topic voting tables or team sentiment trackers to your docs. But sometimes, you might just want to add a quick check-in to get feedback within your text—or add a reaction button to a table you’ve already built. Read on to learn how!

Within this article you'll find...

Add reactions to text

You can add a reaction to text anywhere on the canvas in Coda by typing /reaction. Select Reaction from the quick insertion menu, and then customize:

  1. A default name will show up, however we recommend you give your reaction a descriptive name you recognize so that it is easier if you want to reference it in formulas or find it in your doc map.

  2. Choose or search for the icon you want to visually represent the reaction.

  3. Choose whether to display the Number of times the reaction has been engaged or the People who have engaged with it. You can also choose None for the reaction to simply toggle on and off each time someone clicks on it.

    1. 💡 Tip: Even if you choose Number, you can hover over a reaction to see the people who have interacted with it.

  4. Set the size as Small, Medium, or Large.

  5. Add Disable If logic if desired; for example, you may want to disable reactions after a certain date and time. This requires a formula and to learn more about Coda’s formulas, click here.

  6. To re-open the reaction settings, right click the reaction.

Add reactions to tables

You can add a reaction column to any table by:

  1. Either changing an existing column type to Reaction (this will overwrite existing values), or add a new column and choose Reaction as the column type.

    1. 💡 Tip: You can change the column type by hovering over the column name and clicking on the column format icon that appears in the top right. Then hover over Column type to reveal the full list of column type formats. To learn more about different column types and formats, check out this article.

  2. Select an icon from the drop down menu or choose New to search for the icon you want to visually represent the reaction.

  3. If the options do not automatically pop up, you can click Reaction Options below column type for options on whether to display the Number of times the reaction has been engaged or the People who have engaged with it. You can also choose None for the reaction to simply toggle on and off each time someone clicks on it.

    1. 💡 Tip: Even if you choose Number, you can hover over a reaction to see the people who have interacted with it.

  4. Add Disable If logic if desired; for example, you may want to disable reactions after a certain date and time. This requires a formula and to learn more about Coda’s formulas, click here.

Clear reactions

Let's say you have a "done reading" canvas reaction that your team uses during your weekly meeting to indicate when they're done reading through updates. But each week, you want to reset the reaction so you can start fresh.

Good news! You can now reset your reactions - both in tables and in the canvas - with a few easy clicks.

  1. Open the settings panel for the reaction.

    1. For a reaction on the canvas, just right-click on the reaction. For a reaction column, right-click on the column header, then select Column options.

  2. Scroll down to the Reset reactions section.

  3. You'll see the current number reactions. If you want to clear and reset, click Clear all.
