If you have parts of a Coda doc that you want to reuse or repurpose, you can simply use copy/paste. It's also a great way to take parts of a template or a teammate’s doc and make them your own.

Not only can you copy and paste text, images, buttons, and controls, you can also copy and paste structured data (tables and views). When you do so, you have the option to either create duplicate, unconnected tables or connected views. Read on to learn more about these options.

Copy and paste basics

You can copy and paste any element on the page of a Coda doc. This includes text, images, buttons, reactions, controls, links, etc. You can also copy and paste tables (more on this in the section below). Simply highlight the elements you want to copy, then access Coda’s copy/paste using the standard keyboard shortcuts:

On a Mac
- Copy: Command + c
- Cut: Commend + x
- Paste: Command + v
On a PC:
- Copy: Ctrl + c
- Cut: Ctrl + x
- Paste: Ctrl + v

Copy a table

There are two ways to copy a table or view.

You can click, hold, and drag your cursor over the table until it’s highlighted in blue. Then use the copy keyboard shortcut.

Alternatively, you can click on the three-dot menu that appears in the the top left corner of the table, then choose Copy table from the options.

Table paste options

Once you’ve copied your table, click into the desired location for the new table and use the paste keyboard shortcut. You will then see two options to choose from for the new table:

Create duplicate: This means the table will be duplicated and future edits will not affect the original table. This action will create a new base table, rather than a connected view. Pick this if you just want to reuse a structure or layout.
Connected view: This action will create a connected view of the original table, rather than a separate base table. Edits in the pasted view will affect the original table and vice versa. Pick this if you want the same content but different filters, sorts, or display types. Check out this article for a refresher on views.

To complete the copy/paste, you must choose from one of the two options. Once you do, that’s it! Your new table or view is created and ready to use.

💡 If you choose the Create duplicate option, you will then see a prompt to either Keep rows or Clear rows. Choosing the latter option will delete the rows so you can start fresh. If you ignore the prompt, we will default to keeping the copied rows.

FAQs

Are hidden columns included upon paste?

Yes, we always include hidden columns. You can delete them after pasting if you prefer.

Which rows are included when I copy and paste a table?

By default we will paste only visible rows. Any rows that were filtered out of the original table will still be part of the new table, but will be hidden by the filter.

Note that you also have an option to Clear rows when creating a duplicate table. This will delete all rows from the new table.

How can I copy an entire page from one doc into another doc?

Can I still copy content if the page is locked or if I have view-only access?

Yes - even if the page is locked to read-only or if you only have view access to a doc, you should still be able to highlight and copy any content that you see. The only time you won’t be able to copy content is if the owner has disabled doc copying in the advanced sharing settings.

I chose to copy / paste a table as a duplicate, but now I want make it a connected view instead. How can I do this?

If you’ve already pasted the table and chosen the Create duplicate option, there isn’t any way to revert this. If you want your new table to be a connected view of the original table, you will need to start the copy/paste process again from the start, this time choosing Connected view when you paste.

Is there any way to disable copying within my doc?
