Comments are an easy way to have conversations about what is happening in your Coda docs. And to help you keep track of these comments, Coda will send notifications when there’s a new comment that’s relevant to you. But you also have the ability to opt into or out of notifications for comments across a doc. This article will explain your options for subscribing to (and unsubscribing from) comment notifications.
ℹ️ Note that notifications from comments can take two different forms: in-doc notifications and email notifications. Learn more about these different notification types here.
Within this article, you’ll find...
Notifications for comments you participate in
If you participate in a comment thread or are explicitly mentioned by a teammate (via @ mentioning), you'll always receive notifications for further interaction in that thread. It's not currently possible to opt-out of these notifications.
ℹ️ If you wish to disable the email notifications for all comments (and therefore only receive in-doc notifications) you can do so via your email settings within your account settings. Learn more here.
Subscribe or unsubscribe to comment notifications
If you don't participate in or get mentioned in a thread, but want to stay abreast of new comments on a particular part of your doc, you can subscribe to comments. Alternatively, you can also unsubscribe from comments on specific objects (or entire docs) as needed.
You can subscribe to comments for the following objects in a doc:
The entire doc
Pages and subpages
Tables
Rows
Note that you are subscribed by default to comments on any object you create. For instance, if you create a table, you will automatically be subscribed to any subsequent comments on that table. Similarly, doc owners are subscribe by default to all comments on any part of their doc. But you can opt out or opt into these notifications as needed. Check out the sections below to learn how.
Comments across the entire doc
By default, doc owners are subscribed to all comments on a doc. Additionally, all doc users are subscribed by default to any object they create.
Maybe you own a very large doc where you've created many objects (tables, rows, pages, etc.), so you're now subscribed to quite a few objects. You could go through and unsubscribe from each object individually (by following the steps in the subsequent sections), but that can take some time.
Alternatively, you can now unsubscribe from (or subscribe to) all objects at once. To do so, follow these steps:
Click on the gear icon in the upper right of your doc.
Select Notifications
Next, select the This doc tab
Use the All comments toggle to decide whether you want to be subscribed by default all comments in the doc.
If you wish to be subscribed to all comments in the doc, ensure this setting is toggled on.
If you wish to either unsubscribe from all comments or you want to selectively subscribe to specific parts of the doc (more on this below), toggle this setting off.
If you’ve toggled the All comments option off, you will still be subscribed to all object that you’ve created. You will see these objects listed in the notifications panel (segmented into Canvas content and Tables). You can then choose to unsubscribe from specific objects by clicking the bell icon next to each. Alternatively, if you want to unsubscribe to all those objects at once, click the Unsubscribe from all button.
If needed, you can then go and subscribe to the individual objects you care about most by following the steps in the subsequent sections.
Comments on a page or subpage
You can manage comment subscription settings for pages and subpages in your doc by following these steps:
Go to the page that you’d like to subscribe / unsubscribe to
Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner of the doc
Select Notifications. This should bring you to the This page tab of the notification settings.
To ensure you receive notifications for comments on this page (text, media, buttons, controls, and images), toggle on the Canvas content option. Or to unsubscribe from comments on the page, toggle this off.
If you’ve already subscribed to comments for the entire doc, you won’t see this option. Check out the previous section to learn about subscribing / unsubscribing on a doc level.
Note that it isn’t currently possible to subscribe to all tables on a pages with a single click. Instead, you will need to subscribe to the tables individually. Check out the next section to learn how.
Comments on a table
To subscribe to notifications for comments on a single table, follow these steps:
Hover over the desired table and select Options in the upper right
Select Notifications (towards the bottom of the list of options)
Toggle on the All comments option to subscribe to all comments.
Alternatively, toggle this setting off to only be notified for comments where you’re tagged or you participate..
You’ll now be notified for any and all comments on this table.
Comments on an individual row
To subscribe to the comments on an individual row, open the row's detail view by clicking on the Expand row icon or selecting the row and using the keyboard shortcut Opt + Space.
In the expanded row, find the comments section (typically at the bottom of the row). Click the bell icon see your subscription options. Toggle on the All comments option to be notified of any and all comment activity in the row. Or toggle this off to only be notified for comments where you’re tagged or you participate.
📣 A note about rows with People columns:
People columns have a few special settings related to notifications. By default, users are automatically subscribed to comments on any row to which they’re added in the People column. Similarly, users may be notified when they’re first added to the column. Both of these settings can be managed via the People column options.
