Increase response time with improved comments notifications

Updated over a week ago

Comments are an easy way to have conversations about what is happening in your Coda docs. There are 2 different ways you can be notified of comments in your doc: by participating in a thread or by subscribing to comment notifications.

Notifications for threads you participate in

If you participate in a comment thread or are explicitly mentioned by a teammate, you'll always receive notifications for further interaction in that thread. It's not currently possible to opt-out of these notifications.

Subscribing to comment notifications

If you don't participate in or get mentioned in a thread, but want to stay abreast of new comments on a particular part of your doc, you can subscribe to comments.

You can subscribe to the following objects in a doc:

  • Rows

  • Tables

  • Pages and Subpages

  • The entire doc

Note that you are subscribed by default to comments on any object you create. You can opt out of these notifications, and opt-in to notifications on any objects you don't create. Subscriptions to any object will be indicated by a bell icon. More on each below.

How to unsubscribe from all objects

By default, you're subscribed to any object you create. Maybe you own a very large doc where you've created many objects (tables, rows, pages, etc.), so you're now subscribed to a lot of objects. You could go through and unsubscribe from each object individually (by following the steps in the sections below), but that can take some time. Alternatively, you can now unsubscribe from all objects at once.

To do so, click on the gear icon in the upper right of your doc. Then select "Notifications." Next, select the "All Objects" tab. If you select "mentions and subscribed only," you'll then see a list of objects to which you're currently subscribed. Click the "unsubscribe from all" button at the bottom. This will stop you from receiving notifications from comments on those objects.

If needed, you can then go and subscribe to the individual objects you care about most.

How to subscribe and unsubscribe to comments on an individual row

To subscribe to the comments on an individual row, open the row's detail view by clicking on the "expand row" icon or selecting the row and using the keyboard shortcut Opt + Space.

In the expanded row, find the comments section. Click the bell icon see your subscription options. Click "All comments" to be notified of any comment activity in the row. Likewise, click "Mentions and subscribed only" to only be notified of the default activity.

How to subscribe and unsubscribe to comments on a table

To subscribe to the comments on a single table, hover over the desired table and select "options" to open the table options in the Explore panel. Select the bell in the top right-hand corner of the table options menu. Select "All comments" to be notified of any comment activity in the table. Likewise, select "Mentions and subscribed only" to only be notified of the default activity including comments and rows you are c subscribed to.

How to subscribe and unsubscribe to comments on a page or subpage

You can manage comment subscription settings for pages and subpages in your doc by going to the gear icon > Settings > Notifications. Click "All comments" to be notified of any comment activity in the entire doc. Likewise, click "Mentions and subscribed only" to subscribe only to specific pages, tables, or rows.

How to subscribe and unsubscribe to comments for an entire doc

You can manage comment subscription settings for your entire doc by going to the gear icon > Settings > Notifications. Here you can also manage subscriptions at the page, table, and row level. If you want to unsubscribe from an entire doc, you can select the x next to each item you are subscribed to.

Subscribing people to a row where they're mentioned in a People column

When you add a new People column to a table, you'll have the option to both notify a user in your team when they're first added to the column and to subscribe the person to comments on that row when they're added.

These settings are both toggled on by default but can be set off in the column's format settings.

How to send reminders to yourself with comment notifications

You can also send yourself reminders via comments. To do so, just type @yourname in a comment, then send. A notification will appear under your Coda avatar and in your email.
