Earn money for the Packs you make.

Updated this week

Coda lets you make Packs and charge for them. In this article, we’ll go over just how you can charge for your Pack so you can monetize your hard work.

Getting Started

We’ll assume you’ve already made a Pack but if you have not, you can learn more about how to make one here!

After making a Pack the next thing you’ll need to do is fill out this form requesting approval to sell a Pack. We typically review requests within a few days, and you'll get notified when it's complete with an email.

After getting approved, you can set up a Stripe account to store payments from purchases of your Pack. You will be able to transfer funds from this Stripe Account to another account.

This Stripe account is tied to the workspace and will be used to pay out for all packs owned by this workspace.

To set up a Stripe Account, you’ll need to go to your workspace settings and click on the “Packs” tab. Please note that you will need to be a workspace admin to do so.

Under Pack Creation, click the blue button that says “set up payout account.” From here you will go through Stripe’s process for creating a payout account.

At the end of the process, you will return to the original page for setting a Pack to paid.

Now let’s talk about what it means for a Pack to be paid!

What does it mean for a Pack to be Paid?

Setting a Price

The first notable feature of setting a Pack to paid is that you can set a price: Coda lets you decide how much to charge for your work. Note that this price will follow Coda’s pricing model: charging on a per doc maker per month basis. Let’s use an example:

  • You make a Cat Pack. You set the price for the Cat Pack to be $5 per maker, per month.

  • Let’s say a workspace with two doc makers buys the Cat Pack. That would mean the workspace is charged $10 for the Pack per month.

  • Note: as of July 2022 Coda receives 30% of the revenue from these Packs purchases. So you would be getting $7. This rate reflects the technical costs of the system and we hope to lower this in the future.

You can always change the price of your Pack later, but please note that increases in price (including going from free to paid!) have a 30-day grace period for customers who already have the Pack installed. Reductions in price occur right away. This includes switching from “Paid” to “Free.”

Trialing

Worried about letting folks try out your Pack before they buy? Coda enables trials for Packs by default! Trials can be disabled and it may make sense to do so for Packs that connect to services that charge on a per-use basis.

Making the Pack Available in the Gallery

After configuring the pricing details for your Pack, you’ll want to actually let the world start using it! To accomplish this you’ll want to:

  • Click the “Share” button in the top right of the screen

towards the bottom of the sharing menu, click “Publish to gallery”

  • You may be blocked from publishing if you have not filled out the listing for the Pack (we will flag if this is the case and provide a link for you to do so towards the bottom of the menu)

Your Pack should now be available in the gallery! Thank you for taking the time to make and share your Pack with other Coda makers.
